GO WEST YOUNG PERSON
Well, that may not be the correct expression as used in the mid 1800’s in America (actually it was “go west young man”) but it still has much value in Australia today.
How come I hear you ask?
I was reading my monthly issue of the great Australian magazine Outback Magazine published by the R.M.Williams (of RM’s boots and other gear fame) organisation and I noticed a couple of pages of advertisement for employment on cattle stations across Australia.
Reading these, I thought back to when I was a young bloke growing up at Grenfell, a country town, population 2800, in south western NSW and just what a positive effect those years of working in the bush have had on my life, both personal and business in the years since.
Accordingly, as I see young bloke and/or girl, one after another, trying to work out their way in life, I wonder why they don’t spend some time “out there” working on cattle stations as jackeroos, jilleroos, governesses, mechanics, pilots or whatever?
It is a great lifestyle and whilst the hours can be (and mostly are) long, the closeness to nature, the camaraderie with others you work with and the simple healthy nature of the work (unless the Bundy is overdone!!) gives you an outlook on life that you can never, ever, gain working in the city.
Whilst there is no recommendation whatsoever from me about the merits of these employers, a number of whom I have dealt with over the years as an auctioneer, I believe that if they are advertising in a magazine such as Outback Magazine , that in itself is an indication of their worth.
So if you are a youngster looking to get some meaning in your life or a parent whose offspring are wandering off the path of life or who are having trouble handling city living, why not make an enquiry?
